European Mobile Observatory 2008
A GSMA report, the ‘European Mobile Observatory’ aims to provide a reference point for participants in the mobile industry, policy makers and other stakeholders with regard to the state of the industry. It covers key statistics and performance indicators, the evolution of competition, innovation in new products, services and technologies and the contribution of the mobile industry to social and economic development.
This is the first report in what will become an annual exercise which will also be replicated in other regions of the world. It is a sign of the industry’s commitment to transparency and to engaging with a wide set of stakeholders, celebrating the success of a key industry and describing the future challenges.
The 50-page report on the EU mobile industry was prepared for the GSMA by international management consultancy, A.T. Kearney, following an extensive research programme, which included close cooperation with 40 of the largest operators in Europe.
Key findings of the report include:
- 3.3 million jobs are dependent on the mobile industry in Europe
- The industry and its employees contribute 125 billion Euros per annum to government funds
- Mobile communications are used by more than 80% of the European population
- Mobile usage is growing rapidly and is already close to parity with fixed line telecoms at the EU level and is well beyond fixed line in many countries
- Mobile data services are increasingly popular, now accounting for 17% of total service revenues, offsetting the decline in prices for voice calls and extending mobile into multiple facets of users' daily lives
