Connecting the World

SMS Hubbing

The OC project launched an SMS Hubbing solution at the beginning of 2007, following successful trials. The solution is now in use by many operators worldwide. The key focus of the project was to find a way to simplify the hubbing process for operators, allowing subscribers to enjoy SMS services with any other subscriber, on any network. The project delivered a successful outcome, not only in demonstrating that the SMS Hubbing solution works, but also in bringing together hub and operator participants from around the world to create a more open inter-working environment.

SMS Hubbing allows operators to inter-work SMS with other operators connected to the same or inter-connected hubs via a single, multilateral agreement. This is far simpler than having to manage one bilateral agreement for SMS with every SMS interworking partner. With this new approach, operators can easily expand the reach of their SMS services, whilst benefiting from operational efficiencies and financial savings.

Self-Certification Scheme
Another key milestone was reached in December 2007 with the launch of a self-certification scheme for SMS Hubbing Providers. Under the scheme, GSMA associate member SMS Hub providers can highlight their support for OC-compliant SMS hubbing by completing and submitting a self-certification  application to GSMA. The logos of self-certified SMS hubs are shown below.
