Project Timeline
The initiative was launched at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona in February 2009.
In June 2009, Digital Europe and the European Commission announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by leading handset manufacturers and vendors to establish the technical regulatory framework that enables the delivery of the Universal Charger Solution. The industry will adopt a common power supply featuring a detachable cable with Micro-USB connectivity. The MOU was signed by Apple, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Qualcomm, Research In Motion, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and Texas Instruments.
The Group has set an ambitious but achievable target that by 2012 a Universal Charging Solution will be widely available in the market worldwide, will use Micro-USB as the charging interface and meet the high efficiency targets set out by the OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform).
