Qualcomm tests dual-carrier HSPA+, multi-mode 3G/LTE chipsets

Qualcomm said that it is sampling the newly developed chipsets for dual-carrier HSPA+ and multi-mode 3G/LTE. The Mobile Data Modem MDM8220 supports dual-carrier high-speed packet access plus and the MDM9200 and the MDM9600 multi-mode chipsets 3G and Long Term Evolution (LTE).

Junior Samsung Galaxy launches under Spica name

As promised, Samsung has announced a cutdown version of its first Android smartphone, the i7500 Galaxy. This will not be called the Galaxy Lite as previously thought, but the Galaxy Spica, and is part of a wave of phones hitting the market that provide the user experience and general appearance of a certain high end model, but with a lower price tag and a compromise on key hardware features like camera and screen. The Nokia N97 Mini and Palm Pixi are other examples.

3G licensing back on track? Government approves new plan to convert military frequencies

Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers yesterday passed a new procedure for the conversion of wireless frequencies in the 2.1GHz UMTS band, currently held by the Defence Ministry, for the provision of commercial 3G mobile services, Serhiy Kolobov, the head of the National Communications Regulation Commission (NCRC), told Interfax-Ukraine, as quoted by the Kyiv Post.

GSMA predicts 87M LTE subs by 2014, long life for HSPA

LTE deployments will pick up over the next few years and lead to 87 million LTE subscribers by 2014, according to the trade group, the GSMA. However, the GSMA also thinks that HSPA technology will have a long shelf life and will keep on growing even as more operators begin adopting LTE.
