3GSM World Congress Asia Heads For Entertainment Centre of Macau in 2007

16 October 2006

16th October 2006 - Singapore: The GSM Association announced today that its flagship Asian mobile industry conference and exhibition - the 3GSM World Congress Asia - will move to Macau, China in 2007 after three years of exponential growth in Singapore.

The 3GSM World Congress Asia is the sister event to the Europe-located 3GSM World Congress, which benefited substantially from a similar move to accommodate growth from Cannes to Barcelona in 2006. The Congress is now the world's largest mobile event attracting more than 50,000 visitors to this year's event.

The fastest growing mobile communications event in the region, the 3GSM World Congress Asia has seen its attendance double year on year. It has quickly established a reputation for attracting some of the best known leaders from across the global mobile operator community and broader industry.

This week, the last event to be held in Singapore will feature more than 120 speakers including keynotes from Lee Hsien Yang, CEO of the SingTel Group, Naguib Sawiris, CEO & Chairman of the Orascom Group, Alexander Izosimov, CEO of Vimplecom and Dr Young Chu-Cho, President & CEO of KTF, among many other leading industry figures.

"The decision to move the 3GSM World Congress Asia to Macau has been taken for many reasons. Chief among them is the need to innovate and move with the rapidly changing dynamics of the mobile industry in Asia, in particular, the importance of being closer to China, Korea and Japan, the technology and innovation powerhouses of the region," said Craig Ehrlich, Chairman of the GSM Association.

"As a gateway location to northern Asia, Macau is rapidly becoming the entertainment centre of the region, with purpose-built facilities that have the potential to help achieve our vision of developing and extending this, the most important mobile event in Asia," he added.

The GSM Association has selected the new Venetian hotel and convention centre in Macau for the Congress, which will be held from 12 - 15 November 2007.

"The 2007 Congress will be a fitting and unique showcase for the vision, leadership and vitality of the Asian mobile industry to the wider world," said Ehrlich.
